The students should be familiar with the stitches below. They will not be taught
in class. The class will teach how to use the stitches to create a stumpwork
piece.
Stitches used:
Stem/Outline Lazy Daisy Satin Blanket /Buttonhole
Straight French Knot Chain Ghiordes Knot (Turkey Work)

Stumpwork techniques to be taught in class:
2 types of padding, wrapped beads, wired blanket/buttonhole edge, how to attach a
wired piece
Kits provided includes:
Silk Duponi, 2 pieces of high count muslin, wool felt, wire, beads for ladybug and
blueberries, patterns and instructions

Student must bring:
1.DMC Thread – One skein of each is plenty. The numbers with asterisks need only about one yard of 6 strands. (Change any colors you wish.)
White* 311 321* 744 972* 3802
166 312* 336 780* 3362
310* 315* 471 782 3363

2.Two hoops 5” or 6”. Either will work. The hoops must tighten down and remain tight for the
duration of the project. The Susan Bates hoops with the locking lip and the screw tightener
work very well. It is what I use. The project can be mounted on stretcher bars but must be
mounted drum tight. Evertight stretcher bars or a slate frame work very well.
3.Needles:
Embroidery sharp – I used a #9 between, but a #10 sharp should work as well. Bring a
couple in case of breakage.
A very slender sharp needle – I used a #10 short beading needle. It is used for
wrapping the beads.
#18 tapestry needle for sinking the wire. An awl can be used instead.
4. Stitch guide of your choice.
5.Wire cutters / scissors for cutting wire and scissors for cutting felt.
6.Tweezers (optional)
7.Needle puller
8.Very sharp pointed scissors to cut out the wired elements (Hardanger scissors are great.)
9.Straight pins or hair tape to keep threads out of the way.
10.Metal tip thimble (optional).
